The Vertical Still Life is a part of Oksana Stratiychuk’s Baroque series of etchings. In this series, the artist draws inspiration from the legacy of Dutch still life masters and creatively reinterprets this genre. Alongside the exotic fruits thoughtfully arranged for a luxurious banquet, Oksana Stratiychuk’s still lifes from the Baroque series feature female figures. What is their role in this story? Are they feasting, or are they the supreme feast for the viewer’s eyes? Oksana Stratiychuk pays incredible attention to detail in her work, carefully crafting every inch of it, she elineates the smallest details with a needle, traces the finest lines and illuminates the surface with gentle watercolours, and yet she leaves the essential question open. Let the viewer find one, perhaps even multiple answers to the question of what role is assigned to a human figure at the feast of life.
