The Vase etching is one of the concluding pieces in the Baroque series of works by Oksana Stratiychuk. In this series, the artist introduces human figures into still lifes initially inspired by the paintings of Dutch masters from the 16th and 17th centuries. What role do these depicted figures play: Are they active participants capable of independent action, or are they passive objects for observation and contemplation? This is the question the artist explores in this series, unveiling a particular emotional aspect in each artwork. The Vase comes closest to resolving this issue: three female figures occupy a dominant position on a grand vase, as if on a pedestal. They boldly claim their own space and almost break out of the still life, appearing to be on the verge of engaging in conversation while scrutinising the observer.
