The Pomegranates etching opens a series of black-and-white still lifes in the Zen style by Oksana Stratiychuk. In the early 2000s, the artist turned to the contemplative spirit and introspective mood characteristic of Eastern philosophy. The worldview she gradually discovers she applies to traditional Western genres and artistic practices. Thus, from the mid-2000s, Oksana’s etchings moved away from the Baroque visual splendour and literary narrative typical of her works of the 1990s. Her new still lifes tend toward sophisticated symbolism, where the artist, abandoning colour and plot, seeks to delve deeper into revealing the object’s essence. What will the pomegranate teach us? This fruit is a very characteristic symbol in many Mediterranean cultures. But what can an attentive viewer who may not be familiar with myths but is willing to invest time to contemplate reveal? Countless unique seeds unite beneath the tough skin of a single fruit. The pomegranate symbolises unity and diversity—and this idea is achieved solely through observation.
