Honours by Lyuben Malchev is a laconic and meaningful, even a sinister artistic work. It presents a view of a coffin containing a body enveloped in a shroud. The texture of a shroud is painted with scrupulous accuracy. A case with a military order, apparently awarded posthumously, lays open, making a central element in the artwork’s composition. The inner side of the box is coated with red velvet resembling a stain of blood, and only the medal casts a dull gloss on the background of the white shroud and grey sides of the coffin. Honours for the great deeds are represented by this shroud and a medal, which gloss is buried under human ashes.
