Kaloyan Iliev – Kokimoto is a prominent Bulgarian artist who recreates the relationship between himself and people in a manipulated reality. The unusual and dim worlds that he creates in graphics, drawings, collages, photographs, and installations are the fruit of his memories and creative inventions. His works often touch upon themes such as the new world order, the significance of icons in modern society, and attitudes towards animals.

He has received more than 15 awards for his drawing, graphics, painting, and ex-libris. His works have been exhibited in over 19 collections in Bulgaria, Turkey, Romania, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Poland, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Thailand, Uruguay, Japan, and China.

In my work as an artist, I combine past, present, and future, building a connection between them that withstands the test of time so that I can leave something of essence even after I am gone.

Despite my favourite topics that cover our consumerism society, where I criticise severely what we have turned into, with the respective doses of humour and self-irony, my works still contain my message of the spiritual presence in our material world.

Bio

Kokimoto is born in 1979 in Varna, Bulgaria, where he lives and works . He graduated MA in Graphics at the Faculty of Fine Arts in St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria in 2007 and afterwards specializied from the Graphic Art Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland in 2008.

Kokimoto has participated in more than 190 group exhibitions, contemporary art festivals, biennials, and triennials of printmaking, drawing, and collage all over the world.

He is the receiver of the Award for Contemporary Bulgarian Art Print from Higashi Chichibu Saitama Prefecture, Japan, the Honour Prize fromthe VII International Ex Libris Competition Gliwice, Poland, and the Award for Painting, Fine Arts International Contest Antonio Gualda, Granada, Spain among others.

It was after I gave up a career as a stock exchange broker that I started my artistic journey. To see the light, you have to experience darkness. And that’s exactly what unleashed my creative potential.

What influences me? The great and unforgettable artists of all time have influenced and continue to inspire my creative process the most. I want to be perceived as one of them.

Everything affects my art, but I work in time and beyond it. In my work as an artist, I combine past, present, and future, building a connection between them that withstands the test of time so that I can leave something of essence even after I am gone.
